A Train Journey

The train chugged noisily through vast country spaces spaces made up of many different pieces. Mountains, fields of rocks,padi fields and fields freckled with mounds of red chillies drying in the hot sun. I grew bored looking at the same pattern of scenery outside the window. *The afternoon air was still. Small rushes of warm air made it through the barred windows of the carriage.

I was on my way back to the airport. I had just visited an old aunt in India. Soon, the train reached a station. Young Indian boys, balancing trayloads of hot coffee and tea marched up and down the crowded platform shouting, “Coffee! Coffee! Coffee!”or “Tea! Tea! Tea!”I bought a cup of tea for three rupees. The tea tasted delicious.

The train was soon moving again. Suddenly, it slowed down.Passengers peered out the windows. From where I sat, I could see that there had been a terrible accident. On a parallel track, a man’s head laid a foot away from the rest of his body. The memory of this train journey remained etched in my mind ever since. It is not likely to be erased from my memory.
