A Visit to a Home

Last week our teacher brought us to a welfare home. It was part of a use-your-hands campaign. Mrs Ram decided it would be a good idea for the children to help out at a home. At the same time, we would be able to feel for the plight of others in society.

The home was a shelter for the mentally retarded. It was situated in Willow Avenue. We reached the place at ten in the morning. I found the place quite cosy. A few of its residents were walking about.

Soon, we started to clean up. I used a mop to clean the home’s floor. Some of us wiped the windows clean. Others were helping in the kitchen. Some of my friends arranged the beds and folded clothes. In no time, the place was looking very nice.

Residents of the home smiled at us, speaking words we could hardly understand. But their smiles said enough. I saw in one of the rooms, a boy of twelve, sprawled in a corner, unable to fend for himself. Yet, he was smiling. Seeing him smile, I knew I had no right to complain about anything.

We left the home at five in the evening, tired but very happy.I think Mrs Ram did a good thing by bringing us to the home.
