Accidental love

Tryan looked up and tried to make out where he was. It was clear that he was in rich surroundings. The place was clean and the furnishing was like what they had been in his own home several years ago; before he had lost all his wealth. He felt a pain in his head and remembered that he had been knocked down by a car. He had been walking along the road when a car had come towards him. He could not get out of the way in time. Now he realised that some Good Samaritan had probably picked him up and taken him home. He studied his surroundings again.

Then he heard footsteps and turned his head. A tall woman was coming in through the door. “I am sorry,”she said gently, “I am Jane. I was the driver of the car that knocked you down. The doctor says you are OK,but need to rest here for few days.” Then she sat on a chair beside the bed.

Tryan nodded. He did not know what to say. “I will do anything to make amends,” continued the lady.He looked at her and smiled. “Thank you for taking care of me,” he said, “no one would have known if you left me there. I would probably have died by now.The fact that you took me home shows that you are a real human being.” The lady smiled and blushed.

Tryan observed that she was about his age, about 48 and just beginning to grey. “Where is your husband?” he asked.

“I am a widow,” she replied without any expres-

“I am sorry,” Tryan whispered, “I am divorced.My wife left me when I became broke. I really must not trouble you anymore. I must be going,” he said struggling to his feet.

“You are not going anywhere,” the lady replied sternly. You are staying here as my guest until you get really well.”Then she got up and left. Before she left,she touched Tryan’s forehead and stroked his hair gently.Tryan felt a thrill run through him. He had been dirly,hungry and completely without hope. Now there was a chance of a new life.

The friendship between the two lonely people developed and soon grew into a deep affection for each other. They told each other their sad stories and consoled each other. Soon they were bold enough to cry in each other’s presence without any sense of embarrassment.Then one day she realised that they were deeply in love with each other. Tryan was shy but Jane was braver. One day, she looked straight into his eyes and whispered,”I love you.”

Tryan looked away. He was silent for a long time and then he spoke, “I have nothing to give you,” he said barely above a whisper,” I am broke. I have been in prison, I don’t think I have anything left to offer you.All I have in the world is what you see before you.”

“I have enough for both of us,” she said looking into his eyes,”How long are we going to live? 20 years?40 years? Let’s live together; if nothing else, at least we have each other’s arms to cry in.” No more words were necessary: They just fell into each other’s arms and laughed and cried at the same time. A new life had begun for them.
