I wish I had not said it, but you cannot wish away something. I had called Abdul a coward, when actually in my heart of hearts I knew that he was not afraid -just careful. In fact knowing him so well, I should have realised that he was probably protecting me. I was just too impulsive to have thought deeply at that moment.Well, maybe I was too full of that chivalry nonsense.One unguarded moment had caused me the friendship of my best friend and after a ten-year friendship too.I know that he will never forgive me.

It happened at the swimming pool. We had gone there after school, to have a swim. As usual we did not waste time but began swimming straight away. When we had swum ten laps, we got out and dried ourselves.

From the time we laid eyes on the group – there were three of them, I smelt trouble. They started by giving us cold stares. We avoided their eyes and went to the snack shop. Then they started calling us names. I believe that it was their way of expressing their jealousy, that a good-looking girl like me could have come swimming with Abdul, They started with wolf calls and then went into obscenities.

I looked at Abdul. He just told me to go and change. It was then that I said the fateful words and I did not say it softly either, I shouted it out. “You are a coward!”I said, in full hearing of the band of ruffians.I saw Abdul wince and his eyes open wide. Then I saw the pain in his face. He recovered and just pointed at the changing room. I went in, with tears brimming in my eyes.

I did not know how to face Abdul, so I took my time changing. I was hoping that by the time I came put, he would have left. Well, I found out later that he did not. He was sitting quietly on a bench looking vacantly into space. I was greeted excitedly by Edmund, another classmate of ours. He described the fight. Abdul had just jumped on them as soon as I had gone into the changing room. He had punched the leader in the face,kicked another of them -fully clothed — into the pool,and had settled the last one with a punch to the stomach.That was it! The whole fight had been over in less than three minutes, before the lifeguard could interfere. All three of the toughs had just fled.

I felt very small. I went up to him and put my hand on his shoulder. He shrugged it off and went into the changing room to change. He emerged after five minutes and I walked up to him. I wanted to tell him how sorry I was. He just avoided my eyes and walked away.
