It was a hot Saturday afternoon when I was walking home from the library. As I passed a bus stop, I noticed a wallet lying on a bench. Curious, I picked it up and opened it.
To my surprise, the wallet was stuffed with cash. There were several fifty-dollar notes inside. There was also an identity card and a mobile phone number written on a small piece of paper. For a moment, I stared at the money. I had been saving up for a new laptop because my old one had a cracked screen. Nobody was around, and I could easily have kept the wallet.
However, my parents had always taught me that honesty is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. I took out my phone and called the number in the wallet.
A worried man answered immediately. He sounded relieved when I told him that I had found his wallet. We arranged to meet at a nearby community centre.
When the man arrived, he checked the contents of the wallet and confirmed that everything was there. Tears filled his eyes as he explained that the money was meant to pay for his daughter's medical treatment. He thanked me repeatedly and offered me a reward.
I politely declined. Seeing the gratitude on his face was reward enough. As I walked home, I felt proud of my decision. That day, I learnt that honesty is far more valuable than money, for it earns trust, respect and a clear conscience.
