After A Long Day’s Work

It was time to call it a day after working for at least ten hours in the office! Feeling physically exhausted and mentally drained, I was only too glad to leave for home.

It was evening and there were traffic jams almost everywhere. As usual during peak hours, many office workers were also rushing home. Walking past a car park, I could see a convoy of cars lining up behind one another, waiting to enter into the main street. Impatient drivers honked at each other every now and then. Also,unlike the morning scene, the car parks were almost deserted.

I made my way to the nearest MRT station. Along the way, I passed by a school. As it was dismissal time,many of the students started pouring out of the school gate. Some of them were running while others were taking their time. A number of cars were parked outside the school gates. These belonged to parents who had turned up faithfully to pick up their children. It was a rather chaotic scene with masses of pupils moving in all directions. Parents in their cars sounded their horns freely,as a way of informing their children where they were.I hurried on lest I missed my train. I wanted to get back in time for dinner.

At the train station, it was congested with working adults, students, housewives and shoppers. The train was crowded and as expected, I had to stand all the way to my destination. Looking around me, I noticed that there were many who looked exhausted just like I was. While a few sat there reading magazines and books,others sat with their eyes closed, wanting perhaps to steal forty winks after a hard day’s work. Two students seated in a corner were listening to the radio. They were rather inconsiderate, as they did not bother to lower the volume,The music blasting away brought much unpleasantness to those who stood nearby. With an occasional glance in their direction, they could not do much but merely exercise tolerance.

As the radio started to play a rock song by a popular band, the two students unashamedly turned the volume even louder. This startled some of the sleeping passengers. One timid looking bespectacled girl, who had been nodding off, was enraged and suddenly turned into a tigress. She stood up, walked over to the two boys and with eyes glaring, proceeded to holler at them,”Where do you two morons think you are? Huh? In a disco?” The two boys were so embarassed that they sheepishly muttered an apology. Several passengers burst into applause as the girl made her way back to her seat and closed her eyes once more as if nothing happened. I admired her guts.

After alighting from the train, I headed straight for home. The car park was almost full as most of my neighbours were back from work. Upon entering the house, I was greeted by the fantastic aroma of my mother’s cooking.
