All of us should be politically conscious. Should we?

POLITICAL CONSCIOUSNESS

If we open our ears in public places, we often hear people talking very loudly about ‘them’. One assumes that this mysterious ‘them’ and ‘they’ are a body of evil men and women whose sole job it is to make life miserable for others. Vaguely we understand that the people that are being blamed for the ills of the country are usually the government. These are the ‘they’ and ‘them’ and they are the ones who are responsible for the lift not working properly, the haze and even the weather. This backbiting would not be the case if we were politically conscious.

Little do many people realise that the government is nothing more than the people. In any democracy, it is the people who are supreme. It is they who appoint the government and if they do not like them, they have the power to remove them and appoint anyone else they choose. In fact they themselves have the right to stand for election and if selected by enough people can hold the seats of power themselves. In a democracy, it does not make sense if people speak against the government. Doing so is speaking against themselves.

Unlike those who criticize, politically conscious persons are fully aware that every citizen is part of the government. They realise that criticizing through words alone is far from satisfactory. Politically conscious people watch every move of the government and see that those in power serve the general good. They are quick to notice the deeds which are good and bad. They are quick to give credit and quick to oppose what is not for the public good. Politically conscious people take part in national forums and write to the papers on subjects that they feel should be shared with fellow citizens.

We should be well read on the politics of at least our country; if not of the region and perhaps even of the whole world. We should join political clubs and get involved in healthy discussions. If we have strong political views, we should join political parties which hold our beliefs and if they don’t we should actually begin our own parties. And when the time arises, citizens should be anxious to come forward and stand for elections and get elected to parliament. People who are truly politically conscious will not hesitate to serve their countries in government. If we don’t get involved with the governing of our country then who will?

It is astounding when we hear that in developed countries, even those not highly educated are politically conscious and take part actively in politics. Belonging to a highly developed country like ours gives us ample opportunities to get involved in politics; in fact it is our duty to be politically conscious. We are only partly alive if we are not.
