PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPOSITIONS (UPPER PRIMARY)

“The Good Progress Award goes to… Luke Lim from Class 5F!” Mr Tan, the emcee for our school’s annual prize-giving ceremony, announced with great enthusiasm. Stunned, I could not believe my ears as I staggered up the stage. Tears welled up in my eyes when Mr Lim, our principal, handed me the award certificate and congratulated me. Memories of the past year came flooding into my mind.
I had always been a playful boy and disliked studying. Teachers frowned on me as I was always the one who did not complete my homework. Unsurprisingly, I failed all my subjects in the mid-year examinations. As a result, I had to attend remedial lessons after school four days in a week. At first, I resented those remedial lessons and would find ways and means to skip them. When I ran out of ideas to skip the lessons, I would make things difficult for my teacher, Mrs Chan, by refusing to cooperate with her and not doing the work she had assigned.
However, when I saw how hard Mrs Chan tried to help me despite my negative attitude, guilt overcame me. There and then, I decided to study hard for my end-of-year examinations.
It was not all a bed of roses. When I finally decided to pay attention in class, I realised that I was very far behind in all the subjects and did not understand most of the topic. As I had made up my mind to work hard, I refused to throw in the towel. Being a headstrong person, I was determined to catch up with the rest of my classmates. That was the turning point of my year. I put in all my effort to study.
With the help of Mrs Chan and my other subject teachers, I took notes during lesson, asked questions whenever I did not understand a concept or topic and did my nightly revision before I slept. Even though it was tiring and I had thoughts of giving up, I banished those thoughts whenever I imagined how happy Mrs Chan and my parents would be if I did well.
Finally, the end-of-year examinations came. Determined to do my best, I revised all my topics again. Unlike the previous examinations when I did not know what to write, I sped through the papers with greater confidence. The night before our examinations papers were returned, I was kept wide awake with anxiety, tossing and turning on my bed. My heart was pounding wildly in my chest when Mrs Chan gave out our marked examinations papers.
“Luke Lim! Come here and collect your papers,” Mrs Chan instructed, her voice was strangely stern. My heart sank. “Did I fail again?” I thought. I dreaded the worst and dragged my feet to the front of the classroom.
