“Why me? Please!“ I pleaded with my mother. “Must I go and buy the groceries now?” I grumbled, my eyes transfixed to the screen. Ignoring my pleas and excuses, my mother handed me a fifty–dollar note and shoved me out of the house. Dragging the shopping bag behind me, I walked towards the door. “Meow”, my cat, Jimbo, meowed when I left the house.
I dragged my feet towards the supermarket, which was only a stone’s throw away from our house. Pulling out the crumpled shopping list from my pocket, I mumbled, “Noodles, cat food, carrots, fish, eggs, jelly powder…” I stared at the never-ending list in disbelief before proceeding to look for the items one by one.
After paying for the groceries, I stepped out of the supermarket with the heavy shopping bag. I sighed and decided to take the shortcut home. Just as I stepped into the secluded alley, I heard a hysterical laughter. My heart skipped a bit, wondering who that might be. Quickening my steps, I turned the corner. To my disgust, a bunch of teenagers were taking turns throwing rocks at a stray cat! The poor cat was staggering around with wounds on its body.
Immediately, I yelled at the top of my voice, “What do you think you are doing?” Bewildered, the teenagers turned their heads around but did not see me, as I was hiding behind a huge trash bin. Thinking that the police or someone in authority were in the vicinity, they fled the scene.
I ran forward as quick as lightning, bent down and looked at the cat with concern. It looked badly injured, tired and hungry. “Meow,” the poor cat cried pitifully as it lay huddled in a corner. Hurriedly, I poured some water from my water bottle into my palm and gave it to the cat. The cat lapped at the water gingerly. Then, I looked into my shopping bag, took out a piece of freshly-packed fish meant for Jimbo and fed the stray cat. This time, it nibbled at it happily. Noticing the injuries on the cat, I knew that I could not leave it there to fend for itself. I decided to take it home and nurse it back to health.
When I reached home, my mother was puzzled to see me carrying an injured cat. I explained the whole incident to her. Being an animal lover like myself, she nodded and agreed to adopt the cat. Now, the cat and Jimbo are best of friends and often play together. What a great reward for a little act of kindness!
