An Alarm Clock That Caused Jane’s Unhappiness

One late morning, strong rays of sunlight filtered into Jane’s room. She stirred in her sleep and glanced at the alarm clock. She could not believe her eyes. It was half past ten. She was startled. She thought she was dreaming. She rubbed her bleary eyes and grabbed the alarm clock to have a closer look. The time was just after half past ten. She had set the alarm clock to rouse her at six o’clock. Obviously, the clock was not working well. She would be very late for school and, worse of all, she could not pay her school miscellaneous fee in time as that day was the deadline for such payment. Her strict teacher, Mrs. Pang, as well as her fierce parents, would reprimand her. She was at wits’ end.

The next moment, she flew into a rage. She seized the alarm clock, shook it violently, and flung it on the cold, hard floor. The noise was deafening. She blamed it for all her woes. She vented her anger on it as she took a hammer and smashed it with all her strength. With tears welling up in her eyes, she then grabbed a piece of heavy wood and rained blows on it repeatedly. She was visibly upset as she dreaded the sight of being punished by her teacher and her parents.

She then sat on her bed and stared blankly at the ceiling. She covered her face with her hands as she burst into tears.
