An Eccentric Neighbour

I once had an eccentrie neighbour. His name was Baker Ring. He was our closest neighbour though his house was situated bout two hundred metres away from ours.

Baker Ring lived in a thatched woodem house together with his three golden-haired daughters. Often times, as we walked past his house to go to the neighbourhood store, we could see him busy at his cluttered desk. Unfailingly though, he would look up, smile and wave at us. The children in the neighbourhood thought he was Father Christmas. His verandah where his desk sood had all sorts of toys strewn about it.

Not only that. We had never heard him talk. He was an old man with white, fluffy hair and a round face which was as pink as the flesh of a ripe guava. He had a set of yellowed teeth Another strange thing was that none had seen him on his feet. He was always seen seated and engrossed in his books or busy with some gadget.

I remember one day during a December school break, a group of village children attempted to find out more about Baker Rings. The three crept close to the Rings’ verandah and hid themselves behind a bush. They saw the old man busy as usual.Then, they saw his daughter walk out into the verandah to her father. She tapped the man on his shoulder and made some gestures with her hands. No words were exchanged; just looks and gestures. The old man nodded. The girl then wheeled her father into the house. Baker Ring could not walk. Nor could he talk. The children felt sorry. They felt ashamed. The next day,Baker Ring received three young guests who each brought a bag of juicy figs – Baker Ring’s favourite fruit.
