An Eerie Experience

When I was seven years old, I had an eerie experience. It was the weekend. My father had decided to take the whole family to the beach at Changi. My four brothers and I were happy. We sang all the way to the beach, as we sat in our father’s old pick-up truck.

Once we reached Changi, we quickly found a shady spot. There were very few picnickers about. The sandwiches and lemonade were placed on a mat. My brothers and father soon disappeared from sight. Being the only girl in the family, I was left to my own devices.

So, I played about in the sand. My mother, who had fed herself on the sardine sandwiches, was dozing on a chair underneath a huge sun hat. She was only a few metres from me.

I did not know how long I had been squatting there when all of a sudden I felt someone staring at me. I looked up to see a lady in white with flowing black tresses beckoning to me. She was standing at the water’s edge. She had a sweet smile. I smiled at her and shook my head. Still, she gestured with her long arms for me to go to her. I must have walked toward her then. However the next thing I knew, my mother’s arms were about me as she dragged me away from the water’s edge. Apparently, my mother too had seen the strange woman, The apparition disappeared as soon as my mother grabbed me. By then my father and brothers had returned. We packed and left immediately. It was one eerie experience I am not likely to forget.
