An Encounter With A Conman

Last June, Jimmy’s grandmother was cheated by a conman. Jimmy’s grandmother, Madam Soh, is sixty-seven years old. She is a helpful and kind-hearted old lady. She is also quite gullible because she is illiterate. Sometimes,she even got cheated when she went shopping at the market. Some of the shopkeepers would give her the wrong change or supply her less than what she bought.

However, the worst incident was when she was cheated by a conman. The conman had previously cheated a number of old people before. He seemed to have studied Madam Soh’s movements, so he was able to strike when Madam Soh was alone. Madam Soh lives with Jimmy’s unmarried aunt,On that day, Jimmy’s aunt had gone to work. The conman went up to the flat and talked to Madam Soh. He claimed that he was the son of Madam Soh’s long lost cousin from China. He even brought photographs of his fake family.

Madam Soh, being kind-hearted and helpful, invited the conman into the flat. The conman started telling a sad story about how his wife was very sick and needed a lot of money for medical treatment. He wanted to borrow some money from Madam Soh. Madam Soh gave him about five thousand dollars in cash. When the conman asked for more, Madam Soh removed all her gold jewellery and gave them to him. The conman gave Madam Soh an address and a phone number to contact him.

When Jimmy’s aunt returned, Madam Soh told her what had happened. Jimmy’s aunt immediately checked the address and the telephone number and discovered that they were faked. She reported to the police immediately. Madam Soh was very sad but Jimmy’s aunt and Jimmy’s family were very relieved that at least the conman did not attack her.

A few months later, the conman was arrested. It seemed that he had tried to cheat another old lady but the old lady’s granddaughter had read about the conman. So while her grandmother was talking to the conman, she telephoned the police secretly. The conman was arrested and all the victims including Madam Soh, got their money and jewellery back.
