An odd couple.

AN ODD COUPLE

They moved into our block just a few months ago and occupied an apartment which had not been occupied for a long time; because everyone said that it was haunted. The apartment was on the top floor and seven years ago, a man had hanged himself in it. So no wonder no one wanted to live in it. We suspected that the couple did not know about the apartment so one of the neighbours told the lady of the house. She did not seem bothered and shrugged her shoulders to indicate ‘So what?’. The matter was left at that.

Soon the neighbours noticed that this was an odd couple indeed. First of all, they noticed that the man stayed at home and cooked while the lady went to work. She was a big tough woman while the man was weak and soft. He went to market, looked after the baby, cooked and did all the housework just like all the ladies in the block did. The woman on the other hand went to work everyday and came home. Not only did they have their roles reversed but they also behaved differently. For example, when I went to their flat to ask for a job during scout job week the man opened the door. Bravely I asked him for ‘any odd jobs’ the way our scoutmaster had taught us to. He smiled kindly and then went to fetch his wife. It was she who came and attended to me. At first she was reluctant but I tried the ‘Auntie’ bit and told her that I was living in the same block. Then she turned to the gentleman and told him to give me a job. He did and I cleaned out the cooker hood. I couldn’t help noticing that the kitchen was cleaner than our own. The man was a better housekeeper than my mother was. I laughed secretly to myself and decided to tell my mother about it. That should bring down her pride a bit; since she was always bragging about her clean kitchen to everyone. Anyway I completed the job and received a handsome ’pay’ for it and went away after thanking them.

The couple are still living there and everyone is still fascinated. Not me though. I have learned to accept that what is happening is that we have fixed ideas about life and that there is nothing of the kind that is fixed in nature. The couple have just found a nice arrangement which works for them. Anyway, I believe that the most important thing for a husband and wife to do is to love cach other. I found no shortage of that in their home.So they are odd; so who cares? They are happy and that’s all that matters.
