“Checkmate, I win!” exclaimed Deming. “See, I told you, you’re sure to win. There’s no need to have an inter-brother chess competition,” replied Deliang. They were on a cruise with their parents and were playing chess in their cabin. It was a five day cruise and it was only the third day. The ship they were on was called “Sea Mary” and had all the facilities – a swimming pool, two restaurants, a fitness centre and lots more. “Ming, Liang! Time for dinner!” cried the boys’ mother.
“I want fish and chips with Pepsi, please!””Chips with Pepsil!” echoed the waitress. Suddenly, the ship shook violently.Next, the alarm rang and the captain’s voice boomed over the speakers, “Ladies and gentlemen, please assemble on the deck immediately. We are facing a little difficulty. Life-vests are being provided now.” Deming, Deliang and their parents immediately rushed towards the deck. Other passengers were also dashing to the deck, causing a commotion.
As Deming and Deliang reached the deck, they saw a imountain’ of life-vests waiting for them. They saw the captain and heard him say quite clearly that each passenger must get a life-vest as the ship had struck a reef. At the cry of “abandon ship!”, many passengers jumped into the sea. Icy cold water greeted them with open arms. Some pessimistic passengers kept muttering that they were doomed while others worried about being in the shark-infested water.
“Ah! Help! Sharks! Sharks!” a frantic voice was heard among the waves. Somebody must have mistaken pieces of styrofoam for sharks’ fins. The crew went over to all the passengers and warned them to be careful and not drink any seawater as they might be adrift for days. In fact, they had already sent out distress signals before abandoning the ship.
“The hours dragged by as the evening sun set in the west. Finally, the night came. The darkness was more terrifying. Everyone had been adrift for more than six hours in the icy water not knowing where they were.
Their eyes felt like lead and they found it hard to keep awake. All of a sudden, rays of light were visible. It was another ship! Help had come at last! The captain immediately took out a torchlight and flashed the Morse code.
When they were all on board the ship, hot milk, chocolate and biscuits were given out and blankets were also distributed to all the survivors.
The next day, a 4-inch headline and a full-page article about the sinking of “Sea Mary” took up the front page of the newspaper. It was reported that eighty-nine passengers were saved and twenty-two were still missing. Deming, Deliang and their parents were among the lucky survivors.
