An Umbrella That Failed To Open

One late morning, there was torrential rain in the city. A shopper Miss Chan, was caught in the storm. She was stranded at a disused make-shift food stall by the roadside. It was dilapidated and unsightly. It was covered with cobwebs. She was trudging wearily with two food-laden bags after a shopping spree. She intended to head for home after the heavy downpour. However, the rain became heavier and heavier. With strong howling wind and lashing rain beating the make-shift tent, she was at the mercy of the cruel weather.

Within minutes, the water in the drain rose to a dangerous level. The water was raging and swirling. She looked with fright at the rainswollen drain. Soon the drain overflowed and flooded the pavement. To make matters worse, the roof was leaking badly and she was drenched. Miss Chan was alarmed and she knew that she could not stay any longer. Her life would be in peril, her food, ruined.

Miss Chan acted fast and looked around for something to shelter her from the relentless rain. She spotted an umbrella at a secluded corner. It was lying on the ground. Her eyes gleamed with joy, and picked it up. At last she could escape from the pouring rain. She grabbed hei bags and dashed into the open, moments before the make-shift stall gave way and crashed to the ground. She tried to open the umbrella but it was unsuccessful.

After many fruitless attempts, Miss Chan gave up and flew into a rage. Wet and shivering with cold, she flung the umbrella to the ground in anger, and stamped on it repeatedly. She looked a pitiful sight.
