An Unexpected Celebrity

No one expected it to happen. It happened only once in the career of a ship. The breaking of a champagne bottle and naming it the “Flower Maiden” would have begun the career of the first luxury liner in Singapore.The lady who had been offered the honour was the popular recording artiste — Pamela Pink.

Everyone waited under the blazing sun and looked towards the road. The time of her arrival was supposed to be 2:00 p.m. The crowd was excited. This was the first time a ship was being launched and by the beautiful Pamela. The people did not mind waiting. But as the clock reached 2:30 p.m., the officials were getting ner.vous. The chairman of Able Shipbuilding was naturally a cool man, but this time even he was worried. The shipyard band was enthusiastic, as it was their first public performance. But after playing the same arrangement of tunes four or five times, even they were bored.

Then someone sported a car coming. The chair man jumped to his feet and descended the steps to receive the VIP. Oops! It was not Pamela at all, but a very late guest. The chairman made a call. He returned a few minutes later and told an irritated crowd that Pamela had left her home, as there was no reply from her telephone, and was probably on her way. The sporting crowd clapped and the chairman sat down relieved.

The time crept to 3:00 p.m. A few members of the crowd went off quietly. The younger group waited patiently. But when the clock went up to 3:15 p.m., even they begin to show irritation. Some of them made immediate decisions to stop being fans of Pamela.

Then finally, the chairman made a decision. He went up to the cleaning woman of his company – an old Malay lady-and asked her to perform the ceremony.Naturally the lady was shocked and fidgeted nervously.Somehow the chairman managed to persuade her and she agreed. Then the chairman made an address. He apologised to the crowd for the delay and the non-arrival of the main guest. He told them that he had found someone as important as Pamela to launch the ship.Then he introduced the cleaning lady of Able Shipbuilding. He told the crowd that the lady had been working in the company since it opened fifteen years ago and that she was like a mother to him and all the employees of the company. A roar of approval went up from the crowd as “Machik” (Auntie), as she was affectionately called, went forward to launch the ship.

She walked nervously, with as much dignity as she could manage, and performed the ceremony. The crowd applauded loudly and everyone joined in the festivities.

The next day the newspaper carried the news about the launching of the “Flower Maiden”. As a footnote they added that popular singer Pamela Pink was supposed to have performed the ceremony but had for.gotten to turn up!
