An Unwelcome Visitor

It was noon. A farmer, Roland, was tending his plot of leafy vegetables in his farm. He wore a straw hat to keep off the heat and rays of the blazing sun. All of a sudden, a sharp piercing sound rang out and shattered the peace of the scene. Roland looked up, scanned the immediate surrounding, and strained his ears. For the next ten minutes, he heard nothing. He shrugged his shoulders and dismissed it as mere squabbling among squeaking rats. He then resumed his task of weeding and watering the vegetable plot. All of a sudden, there was a commotion in the coop, a short distance away. Hens and chicks were frightened and in flight. Many were restless and went about fluttering their wings.

At this juncture, Roland left the scene abruptly to investigate. When he reached the coop, he saw nothing. There was no sign of a predator or an intruder. Snakes and foxes abounded in this area. He was puzzled. Perhaps the presence of a bird of prey was the cause of the commotion. He had just spotted an eagle flying away with a large rat in its beak.

He then heaved a sigh of relief and left the scene. He headed for the vegetable plot where he intended to complete his task before one p.m. Suddenly, a kid bleated incessantly. Then there was complete silence. Roland sensed something amiss. He rushed over to find out what the matter was. The kid was nowhere to be seen. There was an eerie silence at the spot where the kid was last seen. Roland soon stumbled upon a giant python devouring the kid. He grabbed hold of an axe and hacked the snake to death!
