And The Journey Begins

There were smiling children all the way. Apparently they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand at the tracks and wave to complete strangers; and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their friends or favourite relatives. This is the state of the simple village people of Malaysia. I was thrilled.

I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or car so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the journey and had brought along a stack of my favourite magazines to read and reread.I thought of the long train journey and looked at my map, I looked about the train. There was not one friendly face, I heaved a sigh and sat down to take a look at my’Economics’.

It was not long before the train was across the causeway and in Malaysia, Johore Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was bored looking at the throngs of people as they hurried to and fro. Then we went beyond the city, I looked at the greenery on the side of the tracks. As usual I was fascinated by the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. The occasional humans I saw among the trees looked like intruders. Then the first village came into view. I looked idly and then at the little Malaysians who stood outside their homes to wave at the train. Suddenly I felt a kinship to these simple kampong children. They were me in another form. I came alive; I decided to wave back.

From then my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste-bin and decided to par ticipate in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive,The mountains seemed to speak to me. I even seemed to see the trees smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 p.m. I gobbled my sandwiches and went back to people and scenery watching. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I alighted reluctantly.I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed puzzled and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile.I linked arms with him as we walked to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.
