Avoiding A Collision

It was 10.10 a.m. The scene was a busy four-lane highway. Traffic was heavy. A tourist-packed coach was on a sightseeing tour of the waterfront. The coach slowed down as eager tourists admired tha breathtaking sights of the harbour. The driver, Mr. Tay, was relaxed and carefree. He did not pay much attention to other vehicles on the highway. He thought that other road-users might know that he was taking tourists on a tour of the waterfront and give way to him. He was wrong. An army truck, ferrying newly-enlisted soldiers to a camp, found that its path was blocked by a slow-moving timber-laden lorry. The army truck turned to the left without advance signal, sending the tourists-packed coach screeching to an abrupt halt. It was a close shave as the coach missed colliding with the truck by a few centimetres. Mr. Tay and his passengers were jolted and many lost their balance. A few fell heavily in the vehicle.They suffered bruises and cuts and were groaning in pain.

At this juncture, the tourist guide, Francis, attended to the injured passengers’ injuries. He comforted them and assured that everything was back to normal. The coach would proceed to its destination as indicated in the itinerary. Soon this unpleasant incident was forgotten as tourists snapped photos of fishing trawlers and ocean-liners.
