Canned Lettuce That Turned Out Rotten

One Saturday afternoon, a housewife, Madam Tang, was preparing lunch for her family. She prised open the tin of her family’s favourite Chinese pickled lettuce. Taking a closer look, she sensed something amiss. One sniff was all it took. It smelt like rust. She could not believe her eyes. Perhaps she was daydreaming. She poured the contents into a porcelain bowl and examined the empty can. The exterior of the can looked shiny and new, without a trace of rust. There were no dents. Neither was the tin bloated. She scratched her head and was wondering why the lettuce turned out rotten.

At this juncture, she took a closer look at the interior of the tin. It was dotted with black spots. She became perplexed. Out of curiosity, she scraped them. The spots came off. The lettuce smelled awful. She left the kitchen with an exasperated look on her face. It pained her to see her money go down the drain. That tin cost her a dollar.

She was visibly upset that afternoon and could not got over it for the next hour or so. She eventually replaced the dish with a plate of large prawns in tomato sauce.
