The Chinese New Year usually falls around January or February of every year. For the past two years, Chinese New Year was very close to Hari Raya Puasa, so it was double celebrations and a longer holiday for most Singaporeans The Chinese New Year is a very important festival for the Chinese. It signifies the beginning of a new year. It is my favourite festival because I get to wear new clothes, get hong baos’ (red packets filled with money) and I get to eat all sorts of delicious food.

Our family usually prepares for Chinese New Year about two or three weeks before the festival. The first thing we would do is to do an annual spring-cleaning of the entire house. We would go through our stuff and either throw away things that we do not need anymore, or donate them to the Salvation Army if they are still in good condition.

A week before Chinese New Year, my parents would start to shop almost every day, for New Year delicacies like Mandarin oranges, pineapple tarts, nuts and dried fruits, abalone, barbecued pork, waxed duck and many other goodies. Our refrigerator would be stuffed full with all sorts of food. We would also go shopping for new shoes and clothes. This is my favourite activity as I get to choose my own clothes and shoes.

A day or two before the New Year, my mother would be very busy preparing the house and lots of food for the reunion dinner. As my father is the oldest among his siblings, almost every year the reunion dinner is held at our house. I am always very happy because I get to meet my cousins, uncles and aunts. When my grandparents were alive, we used to have reunion dinners at their home. Since they passed away a few years ago, my parents took over the responsibility of hosting the dinner.

On New Year’s eve, most of my aunts would be at my house very early to help my mother prepare the night’s dinner. We usually have steamboat, prawn wonton, roast chicken and duck, and all sorts of other lip-smacking dishes. We children get to sleep very late that night. I usually play games with my cousins or we would watch videos till the wee hours of the morning.

On the morning of New Year’s Day, I wish my parents a Happy and Prosperous New Year and I will get a fat hong bao in return. We would dress up in our New Year finery and wait for our relatives to visit us. Then my most favourite part of the New Year would happen. Every year, my father and uncles would hire a lion dance troupe to perform. I love to watch the lion dance. It is very colourful and noisy. The dancers would maneouvre the lion’s head to try to reach for the hong bao which would be hung from the secondstorey of our house. There is also a man with a clown-like mask over his head, performing all kinds of funny antics.Sometimes, the lion dancers would also perform some acrobatic stunts for us. We usually enjoy the lion dance very much.

The Chinese New Year is supposed to last for fifteen days. On the fifteenth day, we will have another dinner, which is a quiet one. That would end the Chinese New Year celebrations for the year, and we will look forward to the next year again.
