WASTED LIVES
Suddenly everything went quiet. The guns stopped firing and the men stopped shouting and screaming. The police waited for a while and then cautiously approached the house. Three hours of confrontation with the most wanted gang of robbers in Singapore seemed to have ended. From the silence, it could be concluded that all the robbers were either dead or wounded.
Officers Daniel and Robert approached cautiously nevertheless. They could not be sure that they were safe; they were dealing with desperate men. Daniel kicked in the door while Robert rushed in, gun at the ready. A sad scene greeted him and then Daniel rushed in. The three robbers were slumped over the tables that they had laid against the windows. Blood was everywhere and they looked horribly twisted in death. Their life of crime was over.
It had all begun when Thomas, the leader of the gang had left school at the age of 16. He had chosen - what he thought was – the easy way of life. He had enough intelligence and natural ability to become at least a middle manager in this land of opportunity. Opportunities were everywhere, even for a person like him who had not completed school. Instead of earning an honest living, he decided that he would take away what others had earned. It seemed so easy, just pick on the weak ones. He had little difficulty in finding people who thought like he did. Two men, Dick and Bert, became his most trusted partners in crime. Together they went on a rampage of robbery, extortion, kidnapping and even murder.
For more than three years they terrorised the country and in the process robbed people of a total of two million dollars worth of jewelry. Their main targets for robberies were goldsmith shops and money lenders. From the merchants they extorted moncy and once they kidnapped the daughter of a millionaire. It was during a goldsmith robbery that Thomas shot and killed a police officer.
Although they were smarter than the average criminals, the police were just one step behind them. Dedicated to keep the republic a safe place, these men in blue worked day and night to capture the gang. The gun battle was the end of a six month investigation and pursuit. The police surrounded the house and demanded that the gang surrender. His followers wanted to surrender but Thomas would not let them. He threatened to shoot them if they tried to leave. As it turned out they were more afraid of their leader than they were of the police, so they stayed and fought it out.
The two police officers looked at the scene of death that presented itself. Sadly they shook their heads. Both of them knew that in a country like Singapore where it is so easy to get a job, it was a stupid choice for anyone to become a criminal. They had just wasted their lives: At just 25 years of age they had died violent deaths.
