Continue the story that begins: “Weep no more my child, I am here,” said a gentle voice.

STEPMOTHER

“Weep no more my child, I am here,” said a gentle voice. I turned around and saw a beautiful woman standing there. I recognized her instantly as the Goddess. She looked exactly like the statue of her in our family altar. It took me some time to recover from the shock of seeing her. She smiled sweetly, “You called me and I came,” she said, ”now what can I do for you?”

“I miss my mother,” I sobbed.

“I know, but she died three years ago, so by now you must let her go,” said the Goddess gently.

“Why did you take her away from me?” I asked.

“No my child, no one took your mother away. The earth plane is like a school and your mother’s studies here have ended. She is now in the next level, where you will be when you are much older. You are fated to live to a ripe old age, and then when it is your turn to be promoted to the next level, you will see here again.”

“Will I really?”

“Yes, of course.”

“But I am lonely now.”

“What about your stepmother?”

“I hate her.”

“Why? She is a nice person.”

“Huh! She likes her own children; and dislikes me.”

”You are wrong there. She loves you as much as she loves her own children — and you know it. She does not pay you so much attention because you are a bigger girl. Give her a chance to show how much she loves you. You have been reading too many stories about cruel stepmothers; so much so that you have unfairly projected all the stories to her.”

I thought for a while and realised that she was right. I had been beastly towards my stepmother. The reason was that I had refused to allow anybody to take my mother’s place in my heart.

The Goddess obviously read my mind and said, ”No one is asking you to forget your own mother. You can love her all your life, but that does not mean that you should not love anyone else also. Your stepmother knows that she will always be in second place. No one ever stops loving his or her mother.”

I nodded, “Sorry Mother, I understand,” I said. Then the Goddess blessed me and right before my eyes faded away. I got up from the bed and walked out to the hall. My heart was beating fast. I realised that it was after midnight but I did not care. I went straight to my stepmother’s room and knocked the door.

Almost at once the door opened and my stepmoth er stood there. Without a word I just started to sob. “Mummy,” I said between sobbing. My stepmother said noth ing. She just luigged me close to her and both of us just sobbed non-stop. This woke my father and he just stood there shaking his head; probably wondering what was going on.
