David’s Unforgettable Experience

It was dawn. A pupil, David, was going to school early. He took the lift from his tenth storey four-room flat. As he stepped out of the lift, he was taken aback by the sight of human excreta and a pool of urine. The smell was offensive and unbearable. The stench put him off and he wanted to get out of this foul-smelling place quickly. As the scene was dimly-lit, he moved cautiously and at the same time held his handkerchief to his nose. All of a sudden, a cockroach was flying about in the air. He moved aside to dodge it, causing him to slip and step on the faeces. He was terrified as his shoe was covered with human excreta. He beat a hasty retreat. He staggered alarmingly to the grassy patch fronting the void deck. Fortunately for him, the scene was rather deserted and his plight did not cause a commotion among the health-conscious residents and passersby alike.

At this juncture, he was seen wiping off the faeces from his shoe with the aid of some grass and leaves. After five minutes, his shoe was as clean as before. However, the stench still lingered, causing him to fly into a rage. He was getting impatient to go to school as his bus was hard to come by. If he missed it, he would not be able to reach school in time. He rushed to a public toilet but it was not opened yet. He avoided meeting residents and pupils as he feared that the stench could prove offensive to them and incurred their great displeasure. He was at wits’end. In the end he dared not go to school.

David burst into tears and stared blankly at the ceiling of the void deck.
