Describe a quarrel between two people.

A QUARREL

I had never seen a pair of such pig headed fools in my life. Ten years of friendship – from primary one— and they were ready to throw it all away for an absolutely silly matter. Both Grant and Clement were very good friends of mine and the three of us formed a clique. In fact we were called the three musketeers by the others. So when the two of them quarreled, the person really in the lurch was me. It looked as if I was losing both my friends in one go and for me that would have been a great loss. The reason for their great quarrel: Both wanted to escort the same girl to the prom and each wanted the other to give way.

The quarrel took place right before my very eyes, Grant announced that he was going to ask Lily to the prom and Clement said that he thought of doing the same. Grant said that since he said it first, Clement should withdraw. Clement said that he had thought of it earlier and that Grant had merely spoken before him The argument became hotter and hotter and then suddenly, Grant got up and walked away. Clement sat and stared after him and then started telling me all sorts of terrible things about Grant. Later, Grant came and told me all sorts of unbelivevable things about Clement. I was stuck in between.

Life became miserable for me as I ran up and down between the two of them urging them to come to the conference table. Neither would. Instead the quarrel became bigger and bigger and at one time it even looked as if a fight would start. I suggested all sorts of things: I asked them both to give up the idea and not ask the lady in question both glared at me. I asked them both to ask and let the lady choose and the loser would behave like a gentlemen and bow out. Both did not want to risk this and were angry at me for making the suggestion. I even reminded them that they were not proposing marriage; just asking a lady to the prom. They were sullen. At this stage I threw up my hands and left everything to Providence.

Then a week before the prom things took an unexpected turn. Walter came into the picture. We all came to know that little Walter had asked the lady and she had agreed to go with him. The two rivals were left in the lurch. What made them really mad was that Walter was the most unmanly fellow we knew, though he was a nice chap. Anyone would have thought that either Grant or Clement or even I would have been a better choice. But there was nothing to do about it now. Finally I managed to get the two rivals to the conference table. They came and sat there for a while staring at each other. Then I started laughing. Soon they saw the funny side of the whole episode and joined me. We laughed non-stop for 15 minutes and put the whole matter behind us.
