Describe a trip you took when everything went wrong.

A TRIP WHEN EVERYTHING WENT WRONG

We had been planning the trip for months; yet everything went wrong from the start. It had been Tom’s idea that we should go on a tour to Batam Island. He had been there once and had come back with a few wild tales about beautiful beaches, open spaces and hills. We had not been very interested from the start, which made Tom even more determined to take us there. Finally, to shut him up, we agreed. He was delighted.

To begin, we arrived at the port a little late, -and missed the ferry. That simply meant we had to wait for the next one which took us an hour and a half. The wait put most of us off and some even wanted to go home. Again it was Thomas who persuaded us to stay. Finally we were on our way and when we arrived on Batam, we were enthusiastic and the island looked as beautiful as Tom had described it – even from a distance. Then the second tragedy struck – Milton’s passport had expired! He was not allowed to land and so took the same ferry back. His brother, Harry, went back with him. This reduced our party to four. I was a little upset at the sight of Milton and Harry sadly waving us good bye.

Anyway, we arrived at the hotel where Thomas looked for the reservation tickets in his pocket. Then he remembered having given them to Harry for safekeeping. We felt like throwing Tom down from the cliff. It took us an hour and a lot of pleading to convince the hotel manager, and we had to call the Singapore reservations office to confirm. By the time we went into our rooms it was 2:00 pm. We had planned to be there by 10:00 am. Seeing that so much of the day was gone, we decided to go into town.

Nagoya was a nice little town and had a welcoming atmosphere. The only problem was that we had assumed that the hawkers’ food there would be as safe as that in Singapore: It was not. It was Thomas idea to save money and eat at a stall instead of at a restaurant. We paid the price. As soon as we got back to the hotel, one by one we started to suffer from severe stomach pains. Luckily for us the hotel management acted promptly and rushed us to a doctor. “Food poisoning,” pronounced the doctor. He gave us some medicine and advised us to rest in bed the whole day. We took his advice and rested the whole day in bed — and saw nothing that we had come to the island to see.

Next day, we decided that we had enough and took the first ferry back to Singapore. I regret not having seen the island properly; no doubt it is a beautiful island. We are now planning another trip soon and hope to be luckier this time.
