Describe an emergency that you witnessed or were involved in

DESCRIBE AN EMERGENCY THAT YOU WITNESSED OR WERE INVOLVED IN

As usual in such instances, a large crowd had gathered in front of the building. No one really knew what to do, but a lot of ideas were floated about; about what different people would do under the circumstances. High above, on the 17th floor I could see a small bespectacled man. He was obviously about to jump down and end his life. My heart ached, as I am sure others’ did too.

Information was being dispersed freely about the would-be suicide. He was good man and a family man too. It seemed that he had been involved in a scam and someone had made off with his entire life savings. He had gone home and told his wife the bad news, but instead of consoling him and assuring him of her support, his wife had scolded him and had taken their son and left the home. The man had asked her to come back but she had refused. He had gone and got drunk – though he was a non-drinker and then had taken a decision to end it all.

I looked about and saw a few people in the crowd with their eyes closed in prayer. I was at a loss too and one part of me wanted to get away from the scene. I did not want to see the man jump and kill himself. However another part of me insisted that I hung around and assured me that just by showing my support — in spirit — I was helping him in some way. I closed my eyes too and whispered a prayer to the Gods that they would intervene and save the poor man’s life.

Meanwhile the police were talking to the man and urging him to come down. Someone in the crowd stated that he knew where the man’s wife was and suggested that perhaps she should be called. A few bystanders joined in the discussion. The feeling was also that the presence of his wife may aggravate the situation. Anyway the man decided that it was better to take that risk. Immediately he called the would-be suicide’s wife on the phone. She came with her baby son in minutes and almost immediately broke into a loud lament. Some of the women in the crowd tried to console her, and started crying themselves. I was distraught.

The police calmed him down and made his wife call out to him over the megaphone. She told him a lot of things that she should have told him earlier. The man on the building began to see reason, obviously. Finally, he went back to the corridor and the police officer who was waiting there grabbed him. When they brought him down, the scene was touching as his wife ran forward and hugged him and cried. Then the couple were taken away by the police.

I was sure of one thing though; it was the combined powers of the prayers of the people in the crowd— people of different faiths — that had saved the man. I closed my eyes, thanked the Gods and went home.
