Describe an event that you will always remember

AN UNFORGETTABLE INCIDENT

It was a simple event but I will always remember it. What impressed me was the human feelings back of it.

I was in a hospital where I had gone to visit a sick classmate. The man I had come to visit was not sick at all and seemed to have made a remarkable recovery, from having his appendix removed. But seeing that there were a lot of people surrounding his bed and that there was no shortage of people to cheer him up, I decided to take a walk about the ward; just as a sort of survey.

I chanced upon an old woman with no one visiting her so I gave her a smile. She smiled back and invited me to come and sit with her, so I did. Within five minutes we became old friends and I found myself telling her all about myself and listening to her life story. She confided to me that she was alone in the world and that all her sons and daughters had died before her. The only ‘relatives’ she had was a family which lived in the same floor as herself. They had adopted her as their grandma and were looking after her. They visited her everyday in hospital and, in fact, she was expecting one of them at any minute.

I was a little surprised that in a country where old people were often left to die in retirement homes by their own children, there was such a family. As we sat talking, a young man arrived and gave the old woman a hug. Then she introduced us. He was dressed in oversized clothes but they were clean; showing that the man was not rich but was well brought up. He told me that he had dropped out of school and was working as a hawker’s assistant to support his family. He spent the next few minutes talking about the old woman and called her’grandma’ all the time. In fact I found it hard to believe that she was not really his grandmother. As we were chatting on, the old woman asked for a cup of coffee. Immediately the young man got up and excused himself and in a few minutes arrived with a cup of the steaming beverage.

I looked across at my classmate and saw that the crowd was clearing and decided to go and see him. I excused myself and went away. As I stood chatting with my friend, I saw the young man standing nearby, looking at me. I thought he stood there to say good bye to me so I went to talk to him.

“I’m sorry to bother you,” he said. “You see when grandma asked for the coffee, I could not say ‘no’. All I had on me was my bus fare home and I used that to buy coffee for her. I did not have the heart to tell her that I was broke. If you lend me some money, I’ll mail it to you,” he finished and shifted uneasily. I led him to the side and gave him a dollar and, because he insisted, my address as well. He went away after thanking me.

He was as good as his word, and I received a dollar by mail the next day with a home made ‘Thank You’ card. I am not sure there are many people like this man and his family around: Even though they themselves are not rich, they have it in their hearts to look after a complete stranger; as of she were their own.
