Describe an unforgettable incident that you have witnessed or taken part in.

AN UNFORGETTABLE INCIDENT

I was with Emily but I saw the car first and thought to myself that it was definitely going to crash: It did. We were waiting for the bus at Farrer road intending to go to Queenstown. It was about 11:00 pm and there were few people at the bus stop. I saw the sports car passing us by; it was swerving from left to right, obviously out of control. It happened so fast and before I could say anything, it went off the road, flew through the air for a short distance and landed on its side in the drain. Emily screamed; I ran.

I turned back to Emily and shouted to her to call the police and then ran straight for the car. It was on its side and I smelt petrol. This meant that the petrol was leaking and if it caught fire, that was it! I looked about and saw no one coming to help. In fact there was no one around except Emily and I. I stood on the side of the litle car and opened the door. It was quite dark but under the light of the street light, I could see that there were two men in there and both of them were unconscious. The driver, who was nearer to me, was on the other man. The strong smell of alcohol came to my nostrils. This was another accident caused by drinking. I tried to get the first man out, but as he was unconscious, I could not. I looked about helplessly.

Mercifully a bus had stopped and men, strong men, came down and gave me a hand. Within seconds they pulled the man out and lay him on the road. A few ladies helped to fan him. We went to work to try to help the other man, but realised that he was stuck. I did not know it at the time, but as it turned out, we were trying to save a dead man. Then an ambulance and the police arrived together. The nurse treated the man on the side of the drain and then took a look at the man in the car. The nurse shook her head and told us that the man was dead. Then she took the other man into the ambulance and sped away.

Seeing that the professionals had arrived, Emily and I took a bus and went away. Next day we read about the accident in the papers. The man whom we had rescued died on the way to hospital. Emily and I were sad as we wondered who had lost a son, a parent, a brother,a friend or a loved one. Within seconds we had seen two lives destroyed forever. Sad indeed. Did it have to happen?
