Hari Raya Aidil Fitri
Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is celebrated by Muslims. It is the most important Muslim festival of the year and it lasts one day. It is sometimes referred to as Hari Raya Puasa. ‘Puasa’ in Malay means to fast. Directly translated Hari Raya Puasa means the festival following the fast. This is because prior to the festival, Muslims fast for one month. It is a rigorous fast aimed at purifying the body and the mind. Muslims who fast eat their breakfast before sunrise and do not eat any food or even drink water until they break the fast at around seven o’clock in the evening. Practically all the people who practise Islam fast strictly, except for very young children and sick people.
It is also during the month of fasting that Muslims prepare for Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. In Singapore the Geylang Area is lighted up and a lot of stalls selling all sorts of goods are in operation. The atmosphere in Geylang around this time is one of mixture of gaiety and religious devotion. Meanwhile at the home of every Muslim, cakes and tit-bits are being prepared. A few days before the festival, they begin preparing ‘ketupats’. Basically these are rice puddings wrapped up in coconut palm leaves. On the day before, they prepare meat and seafood dishes.
Hari Raya Aidil Fitri begins in a beautiful way: The younger members of the family kneel before the elders, kiss their hands and ask forgiveness for all the wrongs they had committed the previous year. Immediately after this it is prayers at the mosque. By this time lunch time draws near. The Muslims celebrate the festival in a grand manner. It is usual to invite many guests, including classmates and colleagues to the house to share either lunch or dinner. The food served is grand, including tasty cakes, biscuits and pies and the heavier dishes like chicken, fish and meat prepared in a variety of ways.
It is usual for non-Muslims in Singapore to enjoy Hari Raya Puasa as much as the Muslims. We collect a lifetime of memories by celebrating this important festival together.
