Advantages And Disadvantages Of Being A Member Of A Large Family

Our fathers and mothers are always talking about how they came from large families. As people from mostly two child families, it is difficult for us to conceive of there being any advantage of belonging in a large family.

The first advantage that comes to mind is that a person coming from a large family will never be lonely or short of friends. It is exciting to think that if one is born in the middle of the family, one will have elder and younger brothers and sisters and that there is always someone to protect one from bullies and for one to protect from bullies. As we humans like to live in groups, what more cohesive group can there be than a family?

In our adult days, we can depend on our family members to rush to our sides when we encounter any problem in our lives. The saying that blood is thicker than water is founded on facts. It is true that in a lot of cases family members will stick to each other even when the going gets very tough. With regard to the family elders, it is also better if they head large families. The responsibility of looking after the old folks when they age can be shared among more people.

The disadvantages of being born in a large family are many too. In a large family, unless they are rich, there is likely to be shortage. There will not be enough food and drink and perhaps even attention and love from the parents have to be shared among more people. This will usually end with unequal distribution. Often it happens that this results in one or more member being neglected and becoming ‘black sheep’. There is a much smaller likelihood of there being a ‘black sheep’ in a one or two child family.

In my opinion, the disadvantages of being in a large family are more and more harmful than being in a small family.
