DESCRIBE YOUR FAVOURITE PASTIME

I love to read. This has been my favourite pastime since my primary school days. I think it was my father who was responsible for this hobby of mine. When I was growing up, two things happened: My father read a lot and, secondly, he bought lots of books for me. My mother did not care much for reading and when she did read, it was “True confessions’ and that sort of stuff. I began reading at five; so my father tells me.

What makes reading so enjoyable? I don’t really know, but I think that it has to do with imagination Unlike when I am watching TV, which I do only occasionally, when I read not everything is imagined for me. For example when I read ‘Ivanhoe’, I read a book without any illustration. I imagined Ivanhoe to look as I wanted him to. Every time a character came into the story, I imagined what he would look like. Then as the story unfolded I could see my characters doing what the book described. I could run wild with my imagination and enjoyed it. Then one day I saw the movie on video. What a disappointment! None of the characters were as I had imagined them; in fact I was not sure that I was watching ’Ivanhoe’. Indeed the movie seemed to depict cardboard characters which were poor interpretations of the original Walter Scott characters. I had the same disappointment when I saw ‘War and Peace’.

Book reading also develops language and I notice that this shows in my essay writing. I am familiar with words which usually bother others and do not need to look as often in the dictionary. Not only that, I use them with confidence — much to the approval of my teachers.

I do not have to buy books at all as I live within single bus rides to three libraries. I usually go to the library once in two weeks and borrow four books. Not all books can be borrowed. The libraries do not carry copies of the latest books and even if they do, the books disappear very fast. There are also some books that I enjoy reading again and again. Thus I have to buy books too. But I have planned a budget to buy books. Also,since my father and I have the same taste in books, I can borrow from him. In fact he buys really expensive books; sometimes from overseas.

I am glad that I have a pastime which does not eat up too much of my resources. Indeed, reading is an inexpensive pastime.
