Dangers On The Road
If we go by the number of deaths that occur on the roads, all over the world we will have to conclude that roads are the most dangerous places in the world. Roads are made all the more dangerous by the fact that we think that they are safe. Most accidents happen because of people not taking the necessary precautions. Something in a lot of people seems to make them think that they themselves are invincible and that accidents happen to other people. Yet accidents happen all the time, to anyone, in spite of there being actions from authorities world wide, doing their best to cut down on them.
The first danger on the road is carelessness. The main victim is also the pedestrian. Granted that drivers are careless, perhaps more careless than pedestrians, the party that stands to lose the most is the pedestrian. Hence we would expect them to take more precautions than the drivers who are protected by huge pieces of metal. Since pedestrians stand to lose more, it is they who must take precautions against getting knocked down.
The fact that we call them accidents seems to imply that they can be prevented. Accidents means that they were not meant to happen. All that it takes is for all parties to take maximum precautions and there will definitely be a reduction of accidents. There should be education everywhere and strict laws to make sure that the roads are safe places. Education should be at all levels and for all groups — including pedestrians and drivers. Laws governing safe use of the roads should be strict. Every road user should be made to realise that life is priceless.
It makes little sense if we tell people to use pedestrian crossings and threaten them with fines and when they do break the law, there is no one around to enforce the laws and to punish them. Also, the punishments meted out to serious road offenders should be severe, so that they realise that they should never again break the laws of road safety. If safety rules were taken more seriously, then perhaps the dangers of the road will be lessened.
