Examination fever.

EXAMINATION FEVER

Something in teachers makes them smile with glee when announcing examinations. So when Mr Rahim wore a ear-to-ear grin that Monday morning, we suspected that something was afoot; something sinister. Sure enough the great gentleman announced the examination dates and gave us the time table. Exams were a month away. I closed my eyes immediately saw days without football, nights without IV and incessant nagging from Ma. I felt my temperature rising too: I had got examination fever.

At home I placed all my books on the desk, and ate lunch quietly. Ma asked if anything was wrong; I told her. Immediately she called Pa. She always did that when there was a crisis, and if examinations was not a crisis, then what was. I went to my room to meditate. I lay in my bed and went to sleep promptly. I would wake up and plan how to solve the problem. ‘That night Pa arrived home with several boxes of that famous chicken soup in a bottle. They had both seen the advertisement which recommends it for students studying for examinations. Of course they did not know that it tasted terrible.

We had a council of war and Pa drew up a study plan. I was right: No TV, no football, no afternoon nap, no nothing until the last day of the examination. I dare not argue. From previous experience, I knew that I did not win arguments with my owners / parents. I went and arranged my books. My studying would begin the next day.

The next day at school, old Mr Rahim asked if we had commenced our studying. We nodded in unison and he gave a wry smile of satisfaction. From that day onwards life was one fierce competition. Everyone was down (or is it up) with examination fever. No one spoke of anything else except our studies. All questions began with “Have you studied.....” Some of us helped each other by passing notes and some of the students, of course, begged and collected notes from everyone, while contributing nothing themselves: Every school has its parasites. Not surprisingly, all of us came to school with tired, red eyes – the result of burning the midnight oil.

The day arrived and I felt panicky. On the morning of the exams, I tried to recall what I had learned and my mind was a complete blank. I went to the altar and muttered some prayers and left with the attitude of a warrior going for his last battle. The first paper arrived and I smiled as everything that I studied flooded into my mind. I looked around and saw that all the guys were smiling too. It looked like we had the exam licked. In fact we did; the whole exam was a breeze.

On the last day of the exam we let loose; as a gang we went to the cinema. No one was allowed to talk about the exam under pain of being ducked in the school pond. No one did.
