It was recess time, and the canteen was bustling with students. My friend Ben, who used a wheelchair, and I joined the queue at the burger stall. We were excited because the stall was offering a special meal set.
As we waited, I noticed a poster showing two burgers. One was much bigger than the other. When it was finally our turn, the stall owner handed me the larger burger and gave Ben the smaller one. Ben looked disappointed but remained silent.
I felt uneasy. We had paid the same amount of money, yet we received different portions. It did not seem fair at all. Some students nearby noticed the difference and began whispering. Ben forced a smile, but I could tell he was hurt.
Gathering my courage, I politely approached the stall owner. “Excuse me, Uncle, we paid the same price. Why are the burgers different sizes?”
The stall owner looked surprised. He quickly checked the burgers and realised that one of his helpers had accidentally packed the wrong burger. He immediately apologised to Ben and replaced the smaller burger with a larger one. To make up for the mistake, he even gave Ben a free drink.
Ben’s face lit up with happiness. The students who had been watching smiled and nodded approvingly. As we enjoyed our meal together, I learnt an important lesson. Fairness means treating everyone equally and respectfully, regardless of their appearance or abilities. A fair society begins when people are willing to speak up for what is right.
