Gardening In The School’s Eco-Garden

Our school started an Ecology or Eco-garden Club about five years ago. At that time I was still in Primary One, so I was too young to join the Eco-garden Club. I decided to join the Club when I was in Primary Four because I am very interested in gardening and I like plants and animals a lot. This is my last year in primary school and I am really going to miss the Eco-garden because I have put in a lot of hard work to help maintain it.

The Eco-garden is not very big, but it is a lovely place because it is quite shady and there are quite a number of flowering plants around. In the middle of the garden, there is a little fish pond, but there is no fish in the pond as it is meant for frogs and turtles. We have a bigger fish pond at the school entrance. There is a mango tree next to the pond and there is a pong-pong tree and a rain tree just at the edge of the garden. These trees provide some shade. There are also papaya trees and some vegetables like long beans and kangkong growing in another corner of the garden.Different kinds of vegetables are planted every year, and we usually get quite a good crop.

There are also many varieties of flowering plants in the Eco-garden. Some examples are the ixora, bougainvillea, hibiscus, spider lilies, frangipani, orchids and even several kinds of roses that grow in tropical weather. This is my favourite part of the Eco-garden because I like flowers very much. My mother has some orchid plants at home and I care for them so well, that my mother has put me in-charge of all her plants.

As members of the Eco-garden Club, part of our duties include helping the school gardener to take care of the Eco-garden. Sometimes we also assist Science teachers who need certain plant specimens to show their science classes. However, our main duties involve gardening, and most of us enjoy it the most. Sometimes, it is really hard work, especially if the weather is extremely hot. I am in-charge of taking care of the flowering plants. I have to make sure that the plants grow well – so once a week, I do some weeding and I put some fertiliser in the soil. I have also learnt how to trim the plants from the gardener, Mr Lim. Mr Lim is a really good gardener and he really likes the Eco-garden too. In fact, he helped to set up the garden five years ago, so it is really like his baby!

I have learnt many things from being a member of the Eco-garden Club, especially things to do with plants.Sometimes, our teacher-in-charge of the Club, Mr Vijayan would organise outings to the Science Centre, Botanic Gardens or Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve to enable us to learn more about plants and our environment. I am very glad that I have contributed my share to the Eco-garden, and I hope I would be able to go to a secondary school with an Eco-garden next year.
