Going Sightseeing In A Trishaw

One drizzling afternoon, a trishaw rider, Ah Soon, was in town. He was looking for a fare. He eked out a living. He lived from hand to mouth. Suddenly, he spotted a female German tourist waving at him. She was standing by the kerb. She was well-dressed and an elegant handbag was slung across her shoulder. Ah Soon jumped for joy at the prospect of earning some money for the evening’s meal. His meal consisted of a large bowl of pork porridge with eggs, and a glass of hot coffee.

Traffic was heavy as he pedaled furiously to where the fare was waiting. She boarded his trishaw and asked to be taken on a sightseeing tour of the sights of the city. She had heard so much about the picturesque waterfront, the popular shopping belt of Orchard Road and the clean and green parks of the city. She was prepared to reward him with a wad of German currency. His eyes gleamed with pleasure as he caught sight of the money. He weaved his way through the heavy traffic while his fare admired the sights of the city. The bright lights of the shopping centres fascinated her. Shoppers and holiday-makers thronged the air-conditioned centres. She took snapshots of them.

As the trishaw was passing the famed waterfront, she was full of excitement. Oil tankers, ocean-going liners and trawlers were berthed to await food, water and fuel supplies. The sight was splendid and rare to come by. She alighted from the trishaw to take a closer look at them.

Half an hour later, the trishaw was passing by a public park when it broke down. One of the tyres was punctured, cutting short the lady’s tour. Despite this, Ah Soon’s fare still rewarded him handsomely.
