As there were only five of us sharing the camp, everyone came under suspicion when Peter could not find his wallet containing $120 cash and some cards. Only David knew who the culprit was.

Alvin was the one who stole Peter’s wallet one night when everyone was asleep except David. That night, though he was very tired, he was just unable to close his eyes as he was being troubled by something quite personal. Then, he noticed Alvin stealthily walk towards Peter’s bag and put his hand In it. Soon,he walked off with something in his hand. In fact, David wanted to stop him from going off but he changed his mind because he knew that Alvin was facing some financial problems recently. His father was retrenched and his mother had been bed-ridden for a long time. He supposed that Peter really needed some money to help his parents.

Two days later, Alvin came back to the camp and surprisingly handed $120 to David and said, “David, I took Peter’s wallet and spent all the money in it. I needed the money very badly to help my parents. However, I promise to return the money to Peter as soon as my father gets a job.” On hearing that, David was in a dilemma. After all Alvin was his best friend and he had to stand by him. All might have gone well had not one of the campers reported the case to Mr Lee, the instructor.Mr Lee instructed all the campers to search the camp-site thoroughly. Unfortunately, they found the money which Alvin gave to David.

“Return the money at once or I’ll inform your parents immediately,” warned Mr Lee sternly. David was in a difficult position. Though he was not the thief, he could not tell the truth either.

The next morning, everyone packed up and got ready to go home. Alvin came with his father who apologized to Mr Lee and returned the money to Peter. Alvin also went up to Peter for forgiveness. David felt as if a huge weight was being lifted off his shoulders. David still wondered even now what would happen if Alvin’s father did not return the money to Peter.
