“Please take your seats and fasten your seat belts. We will be experiencing some turbulence in the next few minutes,”announced the pilot.
Mother turned to me to check if I had my seat belt on. I sipped on my coke and watched the in-flight movie intently. It was the lastest action movie starring Bruce Willis. I was totally transfixed by Bruce’s fast and quick actions.
Suddenly, a man with a heavy beard, got up from his seat and started shouting in a language I didn’t understand at all. I remembered thinking that it sounded Arabic. To everyone’s horror, he started to brandish a handgun which he produced from under his thick jacket. We realized now that we were being hijacked!
The stewardesses were staring at the hijacker with their mouths agape. They just couldn’t believe that this was happening. Mother held my hand tightly. I could see that she was very apprehensive. Some of the other passengers panicked. Behind me, a toddler started to sob loudly. An old lady even fainted.
All this while, the hijacker continued to speak loudly in his native tongue. The tension was mounting. Although nobody knew what he was talking about, everyone understood the peril our lives were in. We were 10,000 km in the air and a madman with a gun was in control of our destinies. Fear hung like a cloak over the entire cabin.
The hijacker pointed the gun at the chief stewardess and indicated that he wanted to see the pilot. He was just making his way to the cockpit when the plane suddenly dropped about 25 meters. Turbulence!
The drop in altitude caused the gunman and the stewardess to fall to the floor. His weapon flew out of his hands to the front of the cabin. As he was struggling to get up, one of the passengers, a quick-thinking burly man swiftly picked up the gun and pointed the barrel at the hijacker. On seeing this, some of the other male passengers got out of their seats and subdued the hijacker.
Just as quickly as it had begun, the hijack was over. All the passengers heaved a collective sigh of relief. My mother gave me a quick hug whilst the stewardesses scurried around busily to make sure everyone was alright. The hijacker had been hand-cuffed and was secured at the back of the plane.
Our journey continued without any further hitches and we were all determined to put the harrowing episode behind us and enjoy the rest of our holiday.
