“A short story competition is going to be held in this school. Students are encouraged to hand in their best short story. The winner will receive a book voucher worth $500.” The principal announced over the assembly. This announcement created quite a stir among the students of St. James School. Rosalyn who was one of the students there could not help but feel excited. For she always excelled in creative writing. Top marks in compositions were not alien to her.
That night, Rosalyn went to work on her short story. For some reason, she could not think of anything to write. The same thing happened the second and third night. One night frustrated, Rosalyn decided to read some of her storybooks from her personal collection. She was hoping that by reading them, she would be inspired into writing a winning story.
As she was going through her private collection of books, she noticed an old storybook belonging to her mother. Though the book was old, Rosalyn found the stories to be quite engaging. Suddenly, an outrageous idea struck her. “Why can’t I copy one of the stories from here and submit it as my own?” thought Rosalyn slyly. “Nobody would ever find out since this book is so old,” reasoned Rosalyn to herself.
Later that month, the result of the short story competition was announced. Rosalyn had won the first prize. She was called to the stage to receive her prize. The principal, teachers and friends congratulated her on her win. But alas! Rosalyn could not enjoy her prize for she carried the burden of her dark secret with her. Finally, she could not stand it anymore and went straight to the Principal’s office to confess. The principal was deeply disappointed with Rosalyn. He told her that plagiarism was a serious crime. He informed her that she would have to give up her prize. She nodded with tears in her eyes. But he told her that he was also impressed with her courage.
As Rosalyn left his office, she felt that she had been freed from her burden. Rosalyn vowed never to be dishonest again.
