Honesty Is The Best Policy

It was just after two p.m. one warm Saturday afternoon. A male pupil, Alan, was about to enter a public library when it began to drizzle He was seen carrying a heavy bag laden with four thick library books. He had already finished reading the story books and was eager to borrow new ones. His thirst for knowledge continued unabated. As he trudged wearily with his heavy load, he was greeted by the air-conditioning coolness of the modern, well-lit library. The library was not packed. He was able to return his story books at ease.

A minute later, Alan was seen browsing through books on adventure, exploration, espionage, earthquakes, phantom ships, and wildlife. After twenty minutes or so, his body gave in to fatigue and he went to look for a vacant seat. He found one and hastened to continue his reading pleasure. He found some of his favourite books on the vacant table and he sighed with relief. As he flipped through the pages of a book on underwater world, he noticed something bulging. To his surprise, there were six crisp Singapore fifty dollars banknotes in between the last two pages of the book. His eyes gleamed with pleasure at the sight of a big sum of money. He could lay his hands on the money and spend freely on some luxury items. However, on second thoughts, he knew it was wrong. He heeded his teacher’s advice ‘Honesty Is The Best Policy’. He did not succumb to temptation and greed.

At this juncture, he spotted an elderly lady flipping anxiously through books on some tables and looking for something. Alan sensed that she must have mislaid something. He went up to her and asked politely, “Can I help you? Have you lost something?” “Yes, yes, three hundred dollars in banknotes,” she cried aloud. Alan at once produced three hundred dollars in banknotes and returned the money to her. She was so taken aback that her sadness soon gave way to joy of relief!
