Household “Chores”?

“Household chores” is never an exclusive phrase belonging to specific individuals in my family. Everyone has a fair share in it. It is not that we are compelled to fulfil our roles but we have been trained since young to accept and enjoy the roles given to us.

My sister, brother and I may be guilty of sibling rivalry every since we acquired the skill of bickering and challenging one another, much to our parents’ disapproval but when it comes to the term “housework” we are very united indeed.

In their attempt to train us towards an independent lifestyle, my parents drew up a simple “duty roster” at home. Elaine and I are responsible for washing clothes daily, hanging them up to dry and folding the dry clothes the following day. Ronald, my brother has the task of sweeping and mopping the floor. He mops the floor on alternate days.

Ronald’s response to his given task initially was,to me, most unacceptable. He claimed that housework should only be carried out by the ladies in the house.That prompted Elaine and I to chide him about his chauvinism. Our mother took the opportunity to correct Ronald of his wrong perspective. That correction was good for him or he would be “beyond redemption” when he grew up!

The one place in the house where I hate is the kitchen. Mother likes to have an assistant to help with preparing the ingredients for cooking like peeling potatoes and prawn shells. I find this very tedious and boring. All three of us also dislike washing the dishes after every meal. But since mother has also assigns this task to us,the three of us usually draw lots to decide on the unlucky one. Mother says that in life, we cannot always choose to do only those things that we like.

Our Sunday afternoons are spent doing house work together as a family. While our mother tidies the kitchen cabinet, Elaine and I wash the toilets and later water the plants along the corridor. It is no wonder that pur bougainvilleas, periwinkle and yellow allamanda plants blossom so well under our tender care. Our father will busy himself cleaning the glass windows and together with Ronald will proceed to the carpark to give our family cara good scrub. That happens to be Ronald’s favourite task and he will talk about cars and their components with our father throughout the whole afternoon. Elaine often teases him that he should become a mechanic in future as it seems to be his primary interest.

In the evening, when all of us have finished our respective work, we would have a quick wash-up before giving ourselves a fabulous dinner treat at a nearby hawker centre. It is probably such incentives that kept us from grumbling while doing housework. Anyway it is my belief that a family who works together stays together!
