It was three o’clock in the early morning. A fishmonger, Mr. Ang, was leaving his semi-detached house to man his stall at a wet market when he saw a man on the crouch roof of his neighbour’s house. He sensed something amiss. That man must be a burglar, waiting for the ripe time to break into his neighbour’s home. Mr. Ang knew that his neighbour was very wealthy and owned many properties and expensive Chinese antiques. His neighbour was in his late thirties and managed many shops in town such as a cafe, a jewellery shop, a boutique and a cake shop. Business was brisk and large crowds thronged them. As Mr.Ang peered anxiously at his neighbour’s home, it was dark and peaceful. Obviously the occupants were fast asleep and oblivious to the presence of an intruder in the residence. As far as Mr. Ang could recollect, his neighbour’s household comprised the young couple, Mr. And Mrs. Ong, their two-year-old infant, Doris, and their maid, Doreen. Their Alsatian dog was nowhere to be seen. It was presumed that the intruder must have drugged the animal until it was unconscious.

Fearing that the burglar might harm his neighbour’s household, he raised the alarm, “Help! Help! There is a burglar! Catch him!” He then blew a police whistle, sending neighbours scurrying to the road. In the midst of the commotion, the burglar was nowhere to be seen. He must have sneaked out of the scene speedily and unnoticed. By this time, Mr Ang’s neighbour and his household were rudely awakened and rushed out of the house.

Mr. Ang’s timely assistance had saved his neighbour’s home from being burgled.
