How A Lady’s Folly Caused Her Own Death

One bright Sunday morning, a young, pretty lady was strolling on the river bank. She wore an elegant yellow dress and a pair of matching shoes. She, too, put on a French-made, expensive hat. She was in high spirits. The scene was peaceful and scenic. Colourful flowers were in full bloom. The air was filled with their fragrance. Birds were chirping;butterflies were fluttering to and fro; ducks were swimming gracefully in the deep, fast-flowing river.

At this juncture, a sudden gust of wind blew her hat off. It landed in the river. She was taken aback. She acted fast. She took a stick and wanted to retrieve it. That hat was of sentimental value to her. It was given to her by her late grandmother. It cost a large sum of money, about five hundred dollars. As she was retrieving it, all of a sudden, she slipped and fell into the murky river. She was struggling desperately for her life as the current swept her downstream. She was screaming. “Save me! I’m drowning!” Her cries fell on deaf ears as the scene was deserted. Her head was bobbing in and out of the water several times as she gasped for air. Soon she was nowhere to be seen. Then there was an eerie silence.

Two days later, her corpse, bloated and swarming with flies was discovered by a fisherman. Retrieving a hat from a fast-flowing river was a dangerous act for her to do.
