How can we as individuals do our part to care for the environment.

Caring For The Environment

The last few years have created a lot of worry all over the world about the future of this beautiful planet of ours. People have become increasingly aware that certain things done by us causes irreversible damage to the environment. Granted that most of the things done to harm the environment are being done on large scale — such as clearing the forests and setting up industries that pollute the air — there is still a lot that we as individuals can do to help save the earth for our future generations.

The first thing that must happen is a change in attitude. We must all stop believing that saving the earth will be done by others or that there is nothing much we as individuals can do. With a change in attitude a lot of things are possible. We must learn to think green before we can act green. Action follows thought. To save the environment, there is more to refrain from doing rather than doing. For instance, we should refrain from using anything containing hydrocarbons. There are a lot of substitutes for items containing this substance which attacks the ozone layer.

We can use recycled paper. This can be a little problematic, considering that recycled paper costs slightly more than other paper. We should also play active roles in recycling activities like selling old newspapers and returning cans and bottles instead of just throwing them away. Even in areas like school text books being given away instead of storing them at home helps the environment. If less books are printed, it means less paper is used and that means less trees are cut down.

Everyone has a part to play in saving the environment and it all begins with an awareness and an attitude. Each one of us can make a difference.
