‘We cannot always build the future for our youths, but we can build our youths for the future.’ This means that instead of telling youths what to do we can guide them to make their own decisions to follow their dreams. We can see that youths around the world nowaday are given the authority to share their opinions and thoughts about world issues through social media and the internet. Those who are between ages of fifteen to twenty four are considered youths. Youth being empowered means that they are given the power to make their own choices and changes in the future. We can empower youths by encouraging them to follow their passion, by guiding them to believe that their voice matters. It is also important to give them a chance to fail and guide them towards success.
Youths can be empowered by encouraging them to follow their passion. We can mentor them and guide them on how to plan, execute and follow their passions the right way. Letting them know that they would always have someone to lend them a listening ear and there would be a need to fight for what they believe in is also crucial for youths empowerment. For youths to find their passion, they need to explore the different things that life has to offer and follow their interests without prescribing what parents think is best for them. This is done in society nowadays where students are allowed to follow their passion through Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs). They are also able to join various activities in the community centres, which offer many courses like dance, computer skills and baking lessons. They can enrol in these courses to follow their multitude of passions. This will empower youths as they feel encouraged to follow their dreams.
Youths can be empowered by guiding them to believe that their voices matter without judging them. Show them that their opinions matter and what they have to say is important. This can be done by engaging them in decision making. We can see that youths are being involved in discussions in school, where they are given platforms to voice out their opinions on issues affecting them. One such example is Greta Thunberg who is an environmental activist. She was given a voice to speak at a world conference to address the issue of global warming. When youths share ideas, we should tell them that all their ideas are worth exploring. This will give them more motivation to carry out their ideas and feel empowered.
Youths can be empowered if they are given a chance to fail and guided towards achieving success. Letting youths know that failing is not a bad thing is a very important aspect of youth empowerment. Failing enables youths to find out what went wrong so that they can improve the next time they try. Teachers and parents should allow them to try solving problems on their own and if they fail, treat them with respect and humility, to teach them how to be confident and patient. This way, they can learn from their mistakes and correct themselves. Parents and teachers should also not judge youths and guide them towards academic success or to attain their personal goals. Smith College has a programme called ‘Failing well’ which allows the participants to fail, then pick themselves up. We can also share with youths the success stories of successful people to inspire them. These stories will encourage them to do better. We should tell them that the way to success is through failure. This is how youths can be empowered.
In a nutshell, youths can be empowered by encouraging them to follow their passion, by guiding them to believe that their voices matter without judging them and by giving them a chance to fail while guiding them towards success. This will give youths the power to make their own decisions and to change their future creating a better life for everyone and not just themselves.
