How Excessive Noise Irked A Homely Neighbour

One cool Sunday morning, Mr. And Mrs. Pang and their three grown-up children, James, Alan and Lilian, were in their four-room private flat. Mrs. Pang was pounding chilies noisily in the kitchen. She was going to prepare delicious dishes for this evening’s Christmas party. It was to be held in the spacious hall. About twenty guests were expected to attend the party. Meanwhile, the noise went on unimpeded. James was driving four nails into the wall. He wanted to hang a picture showing the beautiful landscape of Japan, a recent family snapshot, and two olil paintings. As the noise filtered into their immediate neighbour’s room, Mr.Tang was visibly irritated. He could not possibly continue his reading of the local newspaper.

Once the noise stopped, Mr. Tang was much relieved. However, his joy was short-lived. This time Alan was practising beating the drum loudly as she had to undergo a band rehearsal the following week. The noise was deafening. Mr. Tang flew into a rage, dropped the newspaper and entered his room in disgust.

That same evening, guests were streaming into Mr. Pang’s residence. They were greeted and warmly welcomed to the Christmas party. Soon the party got under way. Pop songs and rock music blared from the radio. Many guests danced happily. Cheers and laughter filled the air. That was the last straw. Mr. Tang stormed out of his home in disgust!
