How should we care for our teeth and why?

They are our teeth. We have twenty of them when we are below seven years old, but they fall off one by one and are replaced by thirty two of them. They are the hardest part of our bodies and without them we will not be able to chew our food. They reside in our mouths and serve us well all our lives and or play us false depending whether or not we take good care of them.

Taking care of our set of teeth, begins when we are children. Even though what we have are called ‘milk teeth’ and will fall away to be replaced by a set of ‘permanent teeth’, it pays to get into the habit of taking care of our teeth. Taking care of our milk teeth will also save us much pain and enable us to enjoy food while we are still children.

Taking care of our teeth does not begin and end with cleaning them. Even if our teeth are so hard that we can actually use them to drill through concrete, if we can fit them onto drills, teeth are helpless before acids. We take acids into our mouths when we eat sweets and other sugary stuff. What happens is that the sugar accumulates around our teeth and the acid dissolves a little of the teeth. Seeing the openings, germs attack. Soon a hole is created and before long the tooth decays and is lost - but not before giving extreme pain to the negligent owner. The job of the germs is made easier if there is a cavity in the tooth — again caused by neglect.

Daily care of the teeth should begin with flossing. It is a pity that a lot of people who brush their teeth regularly do not floss them first. Flossing removes food particles from between teeth where they can attract germs. Brushing after that cleans the teeth and if honestly done will give us a sparkling smile.

If taken care of diligently, teeth will last a lifetime and we will probably die of old age with all our teeth on. However all that depends on how diligent we are and how much we love our teeth.
