How would you organise an elderly couple’s Golden Wedding Jubillee?

ORGANISE AN ELDERLY COUPLE’S GOLDEN WEDDINC JUBILLEE

Elderly couples who qualify to celebrate Golden Jubilees are not too many. Assuming that a couple marry at 25, they will be about 75 years old at the time they celebrate their Golden Jubilees. There is a highly likelihood that not both partners in a marriage will be alive to celebrate such an occasion. Also, in these modern times many couples do not stay married that long. Hence if the honour of organising such an event were to befall me, I will do several things to make it memorable — for the couple and for the guests.

The first thing to do will be to book a hall. The hall should, if possible be of some significance to them — such as the church or temple hall they were married in or the restaurant where they had their wedding dinner. It is important to book the hall well in advance. Next will come the invitation list. I will invite the number of guests as determined by the couple and then send out the invitation cards, those invited are to respond by a fixed date to make it convenient to arrange sitting and to order food and drinks. For those people who must be present, such as the couple’s relatives and close friends, I shall make personal calls and as much as possible persuade them to attend.

Then I will decide on the menu; naturally with the consultation of the couple and with their budget in mind. I shall gather a team of helpers and delegate them with certain important tasks. There will be some one in charge of the food and drinks, someone else taking care of the car parks, the reception, the band and so on. I will pay special attention to the seating. I realise that people are sensitive to where they sit. There will even be people responsible for simple things like decorations.

On the day of the function, I will keep myself free and just check to see that everything goes on smoothly. Timing is important and I must see to it that it is strictly adhered to. I will direct the Master of Ceremonies – probably a son or a son-in-law of the couple – to take the cue from me for everything that he does.

I realise that I will not be able to enjoy the dinner with the others, but then I would be able to snatch a few bites here and there— perhaps from the kitchen. My reward will be to see the happy faces of the couple celebrating their special day.
